Fragments
…The men of Australia’s 39th Battalion had
no maps. They had simply been told that if they followed their feet up the
track they would eventually come to Kokoda. And they were doing their best to
do exactly that. With their feet in raw blisters the only thing to do was
to keep laboriously trudging...

Fragments
…For Stan, of the 2/14th Battalion on its way up the
track in August 1942 it didn’t take long to find his brother Butch’s platoon, even in the darkness. As
always when looking for his brother Stan followed the sound of the laughter
and, sure enough by the glow of the campfire he found him finishing one
more of his rib-tickling stories as the others of the platoon fell about
laughing...

In
the field
There
were many stories of courage and devotion to duty.
Captain Ben Buckler led 41 men through the rainforest after they were cut
off from Australian force. For several weeks during this journey, they were
behind enemy lines. A medical officer in the group, Tom Fletcher,
volunteered to stay with seven wounded at Sangai
village while the rest of the party went for help. When a rescue party
returned, they found the wounded men shot dead in their stretchers and
Tom's body next to them. Tom could have saved himself, but he chose to stay
and protect his friends.
In
another action, Private Charlie McCallum, with a bren
gun in one hand and a tommy gun in the other,
covered the withdrawal of 12th Platoon .

Fragments
…At the
moment that Butch got shot, Stan had been about 50 yards away, trying to
make sure that all was all right with 10th platoon. Before he got to Butch
and amid the terrible fire he met one of the Butch’s
men who’d had his hand blown off :”Butch has been
hit pretty bad. The boys are trying to bring him in.” Stan felt like some
giant hand had grabbed his heart and squeezed hard choking it deadly…
We hope you are pleasantly enticed by these fragments, and if so you can
find a lot more about that historical event
