MERVYN HAINS - Manager & Operator

Mervyn walked the Kokoda Track in September 2005 and met locally placed experienced guides in number of villages. He was asked by the people from Alola to set up a partnership so that they could receive a share of the profits from people walking through their lands. Subsequent to that Mervyn have undertaken all the arrangements required in Australia to establish & operate this company.

Mervyn is a Chartered Accountant, and Tax Agent . He operated his own business in Cairns and he firmly believes that profits should benefit the people on the Track. View "Projects" tab for undertakings so far.


All administration for this company in Australia is conducted through Mervyn's Office
Hains Accounting & Taxation in Cairns.
Mervyn is a Vietnam Veteran having completed National Service during 1969 to 71. He spent this time in the infantry with the 7th Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment and was
wounded in action on 2nd December 1970. He is a life member of the following:

  • 7th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment Association
  • Returned & Services League of Australia
  • Cairns RSL Services Club Ltd.

For his community work Merv was given the honor carrying the Olympic Touch in Cairns in 2000.

A second trip over the Kokoda Track was undertaken during September 2006 wherein 4 Army Cadets from Cairns were escorted over the track. A further trip is planned for 2007 with another 5 Air Force Cadets.
Anzac Day 2007 was spent at Isurava with a group of 12 including 5 Air Force Cadets.


Mervyn believes that age should not be a barrier as he met a 74 year old grandmother from Australia during the 2005 trek. He has already completed 13 trips over The Track .

For his effort  along Kokoda Track he was recognized in a local paper CITY LIFE and called "Merv Hains - Reluctant Hero

 

 

 


DAVID CLIFTON -   Tour Guide

 

 

Like Mervyn, David is a Vietnam veteran having served in 1966-1967 with A Squadron of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment both as a driver and crew commander.  He also spent 3 months as a radio operator walking with 6RAR in an infantry/armour coordination role.

 

David recently sold his business supplying the air conditioning industry with materials and moved into retirement but was convinced to walk the Kokoda track.  Since that time has become fully involved in guiding treks and  to date has undertake 7 trips .

 

He has an avid interest in the military history of Australia and particularly the Papuan Campaign of WW2 when Australian Armed Forces defended Australia for the first time. He regards it as one of life’s great privileges to be able to, as the Papuan men who work with Kokoda Experience and who are the grandsons of the ‘Fuzzy Wuzzy’ have said,…..’Walk in the footsteps of the heroes..’

 


PETER WUENA - Guide

Peter
lives in Nauro and walks in and out for two days to lead our treks. He has a young family. He is a very jovial person and normally leads the trek. He always helps at each campsite with tents etc. to make sure everyone is as comfortable as possible.
You will hear his favorite expressions "Five minutes to rock & roll" or "Lets rock & roll
